New album getting ready + recording in L.A (04/11)

The new album ("Changes") is getting ready. Oz Fritz mixed it at Prairie Sun Recording. It's beautiful. Tim Gennert is doing the master right now. The cover art is almost done. Luckly I'll have copies available in May. Really excited about it.

Meanwhile, I'll be flying to L.A tomorrow to record with Pete Curry and Eddie Angel. Old brazilian tunes "the California way". How cool is that? We will have news about that soon.

Plus, I'll be playing with Lynda Kay Parker while she will be in the NYC area in May. This is really special. I think she's the coolest. Chris Lightcap and Tony Mason will be on this one with me. I can't wait.

The Living Room Tonight!

New dates at The Living Room and LIC Bar

We just extended the residency at The Living Room throught March, so you can catsch me every Tuesday at 11pm (154 Ludlow St). Last week we had Jon Cowherd sitting in which was fantastic. On March 10th I'll be playing two sets at LIC Bar in Queens ( 45-58 Vernon Blvd,) starting at 8pm.

Busy week

Busy week ahead!
I'm playing tonight (Feb 01) with the fantastic "Brazooka Band" at Cafe Wah? in Greenwich Village. A pleasure to play with such a great players!

Tomorrow the Winter Residency at The Living Room goes on. Last week Jorge Continentino showed up and played "O Baião" with us. It was great! I might have more guests on the other nights. We will be playing Zequinha de Abreu's "Branca" for sure. It will be on the new album.

Wednesday I'll be playing with Forro in the Dark at midnight at Nublu. Getting prepared for a gig upstate next week. Again, a pleasure. Fun and great music with great musicians!

Saturday I'll be at Zinc Bar with Marianni Ebert (at 10pm).
So, there's music for everybody this week!
The Living Room Tonight!

So, I hope to see you guys at The Living Room tonight (Jan 19th). Andrew Borger and Tim Luntzel will be playing with me. There are new songs and a brand new N.Zaganin guitar with me.

Goodbye 2009! Welcome 2010!

I played my last gig in 2009 last night. I was playing with Forró in the Dark, opening for Gogol Bordello at Webster Hall. What a great way to finish a cycle! 2009 is/was my first year in NYC and it is/was fantastic.
Moving on, I'll be playing every Tuesday at The Living Room during Winter. January 19th, 26th, Feb 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd. 11pm.
The new album is on the way. I'm finishing the new songs and we will record in February. Tim Luntzel, Andrew Borger and Mauro Refosco will be with me on this one.

João Erbetta's Latino Madness Orchestra shakes Nublu with dancing party

New York (Dec. 14) - Think of a muddy New Orleans party, mix it with Latin percussion, put a bit of surf music in the middle and you have the essence of João Erbetta's Latino Madness Orchestra, which will shake Lower East Side's Nublu this Saturday (Dec. 19th).
"It's a dance party. I will sing half the night and the other half will be upbeat instrumental music from my own repertoire," says Brazilian guitar player, composer and lead singer João Erbetta.
He picked hits from Los Lobos to Ray Cooder, from Marc Ribot to Cachao and a wicked version of Ricky Martin's "Living la Vida Loca". The instrumental part includes a surf version of the Brazilian classic "Tico Tico no Fubá", Duke Ellington's "Caravan" and also Erbetta's originals like "Frevo Nights" and "South American Girl".
"The idea is to take everybody off the floor", he added.
Besides Erbetta, the "Orchestra" includes five other musicians: Andrew Borger on drums, Chris Lightcap on bass, Gilmar Gomes on percussion, Sebastian Zubieta on the eletric piano and Jonathon Haffner on tenor sax.
Norah Jone's partner Jesse Harris will open the night performing at 9pm.

The Living Room

I'm really glad that Mauro Refosco and Leah Siegel will be playing with me as special guests tomorrow night at The Living Room… Mauro was the first guy "welcoming me" to NYC a year ago. Leah is this incredible, unbelievable singer that everybody will listen to in a few months (weeks, maybe?).
I'm sure it will be special. Andrew Borger on Drums and Tim Luntzel on bass. Time's up for the original trio to get back together so, again, you should go.
The White House

I just got back from Washington DC. I was there today, playing with my good old friends Yamomanem Jazz Band at The White House. It was fun. I had a great time playing jazz with my buddies (last time was more than a year ago!).
So, I just wanna let you know that I'm up to play at The Pentagon, Nasa and Area 51. Call me.
New horizons

It's amazing how a new instrument can affect your creative process. I kinda envy people that can be with just one guitar for life... Just a Telecaster or a Gibson Les Paul. It didn't work for me. I tried a couple of times to stick with Jazzmasters, Jaguars, Teles... It's all good. I love them all.
I've been using N. Zaganin "Blend" guitars for a while. I've been using this gorgeous white one, semi-hollowbody, filtrtron pickups and a B5 Bigsby in my shows. Sometimes I use a solid body one. They just set up the first prototype with TV Jones P90 for me (it's in Brazil...).
So, anyway, I was quite happy with all my stuff lately. I felt in love with Ampeg J20 guitar amplifiers and that's my main gear in NYC.
Because I'm working on a new albun and new ideas and projects, I felt like trying new stuff. I needed a more "jazzy" guitar, another semi-hollow and a baritone. So, I got this cool ES125 from 1951 which just got new frets (I'm about to head to the repair shop to pick it up!), a new chinese Danelectro Bariitone (really solid, really good), a Gibson SG Classic with P90 (my latest vice: P90 pickups) and a chinese Epiphone Casino guitar. I can talk more about the tech stuff, the geek guitar player side of things but, first, I just wanna tell this: After less than a week with some of the new instruments I already wrote a good bunch of new songs. What a fresh way to put new ideas out! That's the mais reason, that's the purpose of having a new instrument to me. To serve the music, the big process.

João Erbetta - The L.A Sessions

Brazilian guitarrist João Erbetta recently upped sticks and moved to the States where he recorded this, his third instrumental outing. Searching for the right place to record live with a vintage drum sound, he was recommended Pete Curry's Powow Fun room Studio in Los Angeles and, within three days of his arrival, the album was ready. Pete (The Halibuts, Los Straitjackets) plays drums and Richard D'Andrea bass, João providing the guitar work and the songs. He say's: "I don't like songs with long solos that don't reach a conclusion. Surf and Country music are based on melodies. My connection is with the melody."
Viva Waimea! makes a fine first impression as João manages to fire 1st and 2nd guitar parts as well as some crashing rhythm chords in a single volley of finger work. It's impressive and hugely enjoyable too. O Caipira is a jolly uptempo Hawaiian style melody while South American Girl in an exotic roll-along surf ballad. The only cover amongst ten originals is the excellent racey Tico Tico, but Oil Man meanders somewhat untill João's flying fingers zoom along the Road to Mineapollis. With a Jazzmaster playing through a Fender amp, João pushes this surf-based set out of its box and towards a bit of country on The Dog and the Squirrel and easy listening for This is Your New World, there's even some easy with a hint of jazz on Malibu Nightmare. It's a striking album and Viva Waimea! keeps drawing me back. (Alan Taylor)
